Working with Young People
Chilterns New Shoots is a year long wildlife & conservation programme for 15 – 20 year olds in the Chilterns
We’re delighted to be running the New Shoots programme for the second year; we are welcoming a new intake of 15-20 year olds to take part in monthly activities from June 2022 – March 2023 in the Chilterns. New Shoots is a nature, wildlife and conservation programme designed by and for young people. New Shoots is a fantastic chance to visit beautiful places in the central Chilterns, learn more about wildlife and plants and how to help them thrive. Plus get involved in helping to manage habitats for wildlife and address climate change, and all free of charge thanks to our National Lottery Heritage funding!
Working with Local Schools and Teachers
We work with a wide range of local schools at KS2, offering teacher training and fabulous free resources to help teachers and students explore local history.
The Chilterns landscape has been shaped by human activity over the last 6000 years: from prehistoric monument builders, roman farmers, medieval brick and tile producers and more recently chair makers, to name just a few examples. We want to work with local teachers to share these fascinating histories and ensure local children benefit from an understanding of the natural and cultural heritage of the Chilterns.

Working with Community Gardens
With our Rough Around the Edges project, we are supporting community groups that need advice, training and resources to create, restore and improve habitat for wildlife in small, local spaces. We help with planning projects, recruiting and training volunteers and with buying materials and equipment. A small amount of funding is available to support the projects depending on the needs of each group.
Small, wildlife-rich areas can be just as important as big ones – and by improving and connecting these little islands of nature we can help wildlife recover across the central Chilterns.

Our Sonic Map
We’re creating the first sonic map of the Chilterns AONB, filled with your recordings of special sounds from the landscape. These could be man made, or natural – the sound of a summer morning or a busy rush hour traffic jam. We want to hear what sounds make the Chilterns special to you – what makes it feel like home. We are also working with local artists and musicians to create a series of music videos – click the link to learn more.
