Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference. (Robert Frost)
There are around 4,500km of footpaths in Buckinghamshire alone, but so few of them are walked. We tend to rely on a few published trails and walks recommended in books and pamphlets. Learn how to get the most out of a map so you’ll feel confident in planning your own walks, perhaps choosing the “”road less travelled””.

We will navigate ourselves around a scenic 3.5 mile walk, through the typical Chiltern terrain of fields and woodland, using common navigation techniques. We will also familiarise ourselves with the useful bits of information a map can give, not only useful for knowing your position on the map, but also useful for helping you to plan walks. During the walk we will also introduce some compass techniques, which, while not usually necessary for Chiltern walks, will definitely be worth becoming familiar with, for walking in more remote areas.

Additional information

Participants will need to bring the OS Explorer Map (1/25000) 181, Chiltern Hills North, available from W H Smiths and other high street stores. Those who want to embrace compass skills will also need a compass. The Silva range of compasses is recommended.
Participants will need to be properly dressed for a country walk in our unpredictable weather and bring enough fluids for the afternoon.
The nearest toilet is at the meeting point but only for customers of the farm shop.

It will prove useful for adults who want to get out walking and exploring more by themselves and for teenagers embarking on Duke of Edinburgh Award schemes. Some of the basic techniques will be picked up easily by children.)
